What is this Country Coming To??

For once, I have no words. These two stories horrify me. They anger me. They are both disturbing at the deepest level of common decency.

Multiple Pedestrians Ignore Dying New York Hero Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax - AOL News

(April 24) -- A homeless man who was stabbed while saving a woman from a knife-wielding attacker lay dying in a pool of his own blood for more than an hour while several New Yorkers walked past without calling for help.

Surveillance video obtained by the New York Post shows that some passers-by paused to gawk at Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax early Sunday morning and yet kept on walking...read more.

You want to get angry about something that *really* matters? Then get angry about this: From the National Center for Lesbian Rights website: Greene v. County of Sonoma et al.

Clay and his partner of 20 years, Harold, lived in California. Clay and Harold made diligent efforts to protect their legal rights, and had their legal paperwork in place—wills, powers of attorney, and medical directives, all naming each other. Harold was 88 years old and in frail medical condition, but still living at home with Clay, 77, who was in good health.

One evening, Harold fell down the front steps of their home and was taken to the hospital. Based on their medical directives alone, Clay should have been consulted in Harold’s care from the first moment. Tragically, county and health care workers instead refused to allow Clay to see Harold in the hospital. The county then ultimately went one step further by isolating the couple from each other, placing the men in separate nursing homes...read on, it gets worse.

I read the first article on AOL news today and am passing it on intact, via link. The second article, is courtesy of Colleen Lindsay's blog, The Swivet, which I also pass on intact, via link.

If these horrify you as much as they do me, please follow the links on both sites to write letters to the press, sign the petition, etc.

Why? Because it's the right thing to do. We don't have to stand idly by and let the Whackadoodles rule.

  1. I am so sickened and saddened and outraged at both circumstances that I'm sputtering and speechless....WTF is wrong with people? And WTF is wrong with the brainless morons in Sonoma County? Apparently it's festering with mindless troglodytes who can just choose to ignore legal documents, nevermind completely lacking the capacity for common decency. It's utterly appalling.

  2. It is utterly appalling and deeply disturbing. How can people rush by a dying man and not take two seconds to punch three little numbers in to the cell phone that you know was in their purse or pocket...nine one one. Two seconds and three little numbers could have saved that man's life.

And how many more Clay and Harolds are out there? I suspect many. My heart hurts for them. I only hope that their case will be big, loud and noisy and make a enormous stink so that others like them won't suffer the same awful fate. And that they're finally together in the big out-there-somewhere.

  4. These stories are awful... but... I love your WhackADoodle blog!

Unfortunately, I don't think so-called "common sense" is really all too common.

  8. I was entering a restaurant in Pennsylvania on vacation last month when an elderly lady became too weak to walk up the sidewalk enterence. It was like a competion to lay hands on her to carry the poor thing into the air conditions restaurant. It made me proud to see all sorts of people help.

I don't know about other places. Maybe people are just afraid. It is sad.

  9. Olivia:

I love your other blogs, too, but for quite a while I have not been able to post on them because the Name / URL option is not available as it is here. Could you PLEASE click that option and let me in from the cold?

I'm a bit tech challenged, and there are limits to how many times I can ask my son for help.

  11. Wally,

This is weird, OpenID was enabled. I didn't have my email in a slot that may've kept it from working. Let's try. The only other option is to let Anonymous post and UGH! :) I hope this works. If not, email me at: droherrell(at)aol(dot)com or thatrebelwithablog(at)gmail(dot)com and I'll see if there's something else to be done.

    I look forward to connecting.
